This
cluster of small Chicago neighborhoods is located on the
city's northwest side, just south of West
Rogers Park.
The area is almost entirely residential, with well-kept homes and quiet,
tree-lined streets in which the brick and stone homes one sees are usually
owned by their tenants. North Park College and Northeastern
Illinois University are close at hand, and there are several large
city parks interspersed throughout the area. The largest of these is Peterson
Park, which is officially located at 5801N. Pulaski, but which
actually dominates the entire western edge of the area. Hollywood
Park,
located at 3312 W. Thorndale, is just a few blocks away. The main thoroughfares through the neighborood offer nearly anything one might need for comfortable, just-outside-the-city living, and the Ravenswood stop of the Metra line is just a few blocks to the southeast. The El Red and Brown lines are also a short bus trip (or pleasant stroll) from the area. The eastern end of this area is dominated by the historic Rosehill Cemetery, the single largest cemetery in Chicago (350 acres) and one of the oldest, having accepted its first "guest" in 1859. The name Rosehill came about due to the error of a mapmaker - the area was originally named after a local barkeeper named Hiram Roe - "Roe's Hill". Just a few blocks further east of Rosehill is Andersonville, with its ecclectic mix of bars, restaurants, shops and cafes, all a short walk, drive or bus-hop away. Buses run on Foster, Western, Peterson and Lincoln avenues.
